Arabica vs Robusta: What Is the Difference?

Discover the main differences between Arabica and Robusta coffee, from growing conditions to flavor and caffeine.

Arabica and Robusta are the two most widely known commercially cultivated coffee species.

Arabica is generally associated with greater aromatic complexity, acidity and sweetness. It is often grown at higher elevations and can be more sensitive to environmental conditions.

Robusta, scientifically known as Coffea canephora, is generally more resistant to heat, pests and disease. It also typically contains more caffeine than Arabica.

In the cup, Robusta often has a stronger body and more pronounced bitterness, while Arabica can offer a wider range of floral, fruity, sweet and acidic characteristics.

Both species have an important place in the coffee industry, and the quality of a coffee depends on much more than its species alone.
